Wood floors from Apollo Flooring

As a family owned business since 1959, Apollo’s Flooring Center and its team of flooring professionals has seen the overwhelming dominance of oak flooring changed with the arrival of pre-finished flooring, engineered products and exotic species all of which make it easier and far more fashionable to design and decorate with wood.

There is hardly a flooring more unique than wood

First, no two pieces are ever alike. Next, wood grain is unique from species to species, tree to tree and cutting to cutting. Now there’s a whole new world of wood beyond the traditionals of oak and maple. And finally there’s what you can do designing with wood which is uniquely a matter of imagination.

Exotic woods

Let’s get exotic… Apollo Flooring knows all about exotic woods, especially in the form of engineered hardwood. Exotic wood means that extremely high end, novel looks can be achieved at costs often approaching those of standard oak. Unlike solid wood, the structure of engineered wood flooring performs better because its layers provide more dimensional stability and therefore a greater number places wood can be used in the home, places solid wood just can’t go.

“Character” is driving the trends in wood beginning with wider dimension boards. That’s partially true because they look better in our larger homes. The same can be said for the character of aged or distressed looking floors and in the unexpected appearance of Brazilian cherry, African wenge, merbau, teak and others as well as re-harvestable bamboo (actually harder than oak) and cork.

You might have also heard the term “longstrip”, actually a larger format of engineered wood flooring. Both are laminated much like plywood, and each features choice cuttings for the face. Longstrips are multi-plank boards averaging 8 inches by 7 feet for fast installation.

Multi-width planks are also growing in popularity, with varied widths 3 inch, 5 inch and 7 inches, for a truly custom look. Don’t forget, wood is color, too, from blond and soft butter creams to smokey greys and dark coffee oaks. Ask your Apollo Flooring expert about hardwood flooring choices in shades and tones influenced by exotics from undiscovered corners of the world.
