- How long has the present carpet been in place?
- Was it a pattern, texture, etc.?
- Was it easy to maintain?
- How are the traffic areas?
- Being able to share this history with your flooring specialist will help you select your next carpet’s fiber, as well as soil and stain characteristics.
Assess the condition of your old floor
- Especially the subfloor if possible.
- Your flooring specialist can help you with this, generally during the measuring procedure.
Color and style play an important role
- In carpet maintenance and performance.
- For example; level loops and cut pile tweeds including highly twisted and kinked yarn friezes will hide traffic patterns and surface soil.
- Earth tone beiges and browns disguise light soil the best.
REMEMBER: Dirt Particles have sharp edges
- These edges will cut the carpet fibers quickly.
- Regular vacuuming keeps them from spreading throughout the yarn.
Sometimes a carpet projects a luster, that is, it reflects light
- Others for example, multi-color tweeds and large looped carpet (called berbers) have a soft-toned finish with no luster.
Berber loop is a fashionable carpet
- It is easy to clean as dirt remains on top of the loops.
- The loops can tend to flatten a bit with traffic, more or less depending on the size of the loop and the nature of the traffic.
- Think before installing berbers on stairs.

- Perhaps you’d like a carpet with a border to highlight colors in your furniture or prized possessions.
To reduce seams and still get the most from every square foot of carpet, collaborate with your flooring expert
- Simply using the least amount of carpet may result in an unfortunate seam placement.
- Seams near windows and doorways are most noticeable.

- You will never see it after it is installed, but a cushion that is properly matched to your carpet helps you floor look better, last longer and feel great underfoot.
